Secma Qpod Club

Qpod Club - be a part of the fun!

The only snag with using the Qpod is the high road tax. I have written to DVLA, Minisrty Of Transport even the Minister direct and so far can not get the pod tax on emmisions. Has anyone else tackled this area? I would love to hear from you if so.

Surely a letter from Secma or Nigel Scarr is not going to do anything. As far as I understand the regulations - in order for a vehicle to be 're-classified' and therefore emissions tested to try and lower its VED band you need to get the vehicle individually type approved to M1 category under the 'Normal' Individual Vehicle Approval scheme. Problem is, is this 'Normal' approval is very strict (meant for manufacturers, not individuals) and requires various documentary proof that the vehicle met M1 status. Secma won't have the documentation required to satisfy this because the QT was only ever built to the lower L7e class.

The only way I believe you could get a QT500 tested under the much easier 'Basic' Individual Type Approval ( how a homebuilt Kit Car gets type approved without any manufacturer documentation) is you would have to import it as a left hand drive. Then the QT could theoretically be classed in the M1 category using 'Basic' Individual Vehicle Approval. VED band could then be changed I would think.
I think you all know i'm 100% behind you on this subject.

"Pay to the queen what is Right" I have no issue with, but because the UK government can't be bothered to look at non mass produced cars they rip off.

Maybe in the summer we should do a protest run. Take our Pods and QT's in to London.
I'm sure that i can find a camping ground somewhere on the london side of Essex for a weekend !.

Maybe we could also take in the Dartford crossing to boot !
50 or so Pods / QT's turn up with £20 notes - they soon run out of change.

Alex.
Yes - the Motorcycle lobby did this, but with something like 5,000 Bikes.
we can't hope to do a demo on that sort of scale in Pods / Quads but hell would it be fun :)
It certainly would be great fun and I am certainly up for it tho' I have my doubts it will get us anywhere regarding the road tax.

The issue with the high tax on a pod is because of the way that the UK Government introduced the Emmisions based Road Tax.

The Regulations only apply to Cars, as defined at http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/WhatCanYouDriv...

Pod's, QT's etc. along with other Quadricycles are not cars so fall outside the emissions tax system and therefore can not be taxed as such.
As quads are taxable in line with all powered road vehacles they fall in to the PLG Tax category.

There is a good explanation of the Governments position at:

http://www.betterregulation.gov.uk/ideas/viewidea.cfm?proposalid=3c...

I think that the only way we can tackle this issue will be to get the entire quadricycle community on board.
That will be a somewhat tall order requiring more time and energy than I and probably most other people on this forum can give.
When i did the N0. 10 Petition some time ago, i posted on to the various Quad bike forums and got a somewhat appathetic response.

I Approached the Motorcycle Lobby group, MAG some time ago to see if they would help us by picking up this issue. Whilst they didn't say No, they felt that it may divert resources away from their primary campaigns .

So, Where do WE as a group go from here ?
