Dead Starter Motor ?

Hi

I'm getting the dreaded "click" from the Starter Motor.
It's NOT the Battery, That's fully charged and in good condition.

Without a recoil starter i'm a tad stuck (Thankfully at home).

I'm guessing Motor Brushes, but any ither ideas welcome.

Solved (I think)

It was a Loose wire on the Starter Solonoid.

I have to say that the Solonoid Mounting SUX - Total git to get at.
I then left the Ignition / Lights on so now i have a Flat Battery :(

I looked at taking out the Starter Motor.
No chance without taking the Engine out and dismantling 1/2 the back of the machine so I won't be going this route until all others are exhausted.

Not good:(
Battery Fully charged, so i dropped it back in.

"Click"
Meter tells me 12.5 Volts, but it didn't drop as I turned the key.

There are 2X 8MM bolts on the end of the starter motor (hidden in the muck n gunk).
Undid those and the end cover came off with the Lead.
Gave it a good spray with Cleaner then contact grease.

Hey Presto - away we go. I just hope it's simply stuck brushes.

See my extensive postings on Qpod starter motors and their removal.
The units themselves are very poor and brushes although available don't last long as the com. gets very pitted and wears them away.
Avoid using WD40 or similar on the motor whatever you do it's a short tem fix that leads to major problems later on.

Hi Mike

Agree on the WD40 - I used Contact Grease.
WD40 is by it's very nature an Insulator, not what you want on a Motor.
It also works it's way in to the Brushes and destroys those as well.

If I have further problems I may take you up on your spare motor (If you still have it).

I set about fixing my Starter Motor today.

BAD IDEA.....

Looking at the books, the motor is held on by 2 bolts but sits behind the engine. (Between the engine and Gearbox )

VERY long Alen keys obtained, and I thought i could get it out with the engine in place.

Wrong....... It's also held on by a Large Jubalee clip :(

Took the Engine out, and got the starter motor off.

I had some new Brush material, but all that was wrong is the brushes had worn at an angle and were jaming in the guides so i just turned em over. Starter tested and all looks well (time will tell)

All back together now but it was a good few hours work.......
