small cracks around fixing bolts on rear mud-guards on qpod sport

I viewed a qpod sport 350 and noticed small cracks coming out from the fixing bolts on the rear bumpers, when i raised the issue with the seller he told me this was a common fault due to vibration,is this true?the pod drove very well but was a bit vibrating due to the engine, are the guards easy to replace also?as it has the fat wheels/tyres can i just take the guards off and drive it without them?and lastly where is the common place to put the tax disc as i would worry some git may steal it..

Hi

The cracking on the mudguards is a very common issue, they are riveted on at the side of the body too but can be replaced, I think Richard Gerrard used some from a trailer - most of us just put up with it!

I believe that it is illegal to drive on public roads without mudguards  The vibrating in motion will also be partly due to the nobbly tires.

I use a motorcycle tax disc holder and bolt it onto the rear nearside bumper bolt facing outwards.

Regards

Chris

Hello,

I can answer 2 of your queries.

Mudguards: I have a 50cc 3 wheeled Qpod and get through mudguards like nobody's business. The plastic is rather flimsy and mine break at the mounting points which are plastic flanges. I've recently had them repaired and metal plated so hopefully this might help to strengthen them. So in answer to your question - no it's not unusual.

Tax Disc: Go to http://www.secur-i-disc.co.uk/ they sell a brilliant police approved tamper proof tax disc holder and last year they were £1.50. It mashes up the disc if and when you remove it. I've got one on my pod, hubby's Goldwing and 2 cars - brilliant.

Hope this helps,

Jaquelyn

Cheers for that, was thinking of a motorbike disc holder just wasnt sure.he has it up for sale at £1000-£1600,starting bid is a grand, its a qpod sport 350 on an 04 plate with a yrs mot, overall very good condition,do you think this is a good price?i have put a picture of it in my photos..

I have some secui-disc. Selling them at £1 each, if anyone interested I'll bring to the summer gathering at the weekend.

Mags

Hi Richard

if you are interested in a Qpod Sport drop me a line:

melnyk@mailcan.com.

you can have mine in early August for £1400. I bought it two weeks ago off ebay for £1500 and since then have put a years tax and test on it at Cunninghams. The mileage is good and the car is on an 06 plate.

I bought the Qpod Sport as a stop gap on a 500 extre'm bug because I just couldn't wait. I have a extrem 500 the offing for 3.5k but it won't be available until early August, hence I would be happy to part with mine. It also has a small crack on one side where the mudguard meets the fixing bolts.

best wishes

Mike

ok Mags where did you knock them off from?

Not knock off.... all above board, mate at work sells them and I said I'd ask around if anyone wants them.

Like I said £1 each so get your bargain this weekend.....

THe cracking on the fixings on the mudguards is common, due to vibration.

One solution is to get them off and then beef them up at the fixing points using fibreglass.

cheers Albert, have thought of that, and also looking at getting some bespoke one made from the same plastic lorry guards are made from,i have a local manufacturer nearby.i fitted the cab-kit fine, although the "wire" at the rear where it is retained by the bananas was not strong enough so i replaced it with some threaded bar, using 2 nuts either side to keep in place, works a treat..

I have actually considered having replica mudguards made in aluminium.

There are some very skilled and clever people around who can make complicated things out of sheet metal, like replica helmets, breastplates and the like for enthusiasts who engage in re enactments of medieval battles, etc.,

But I have not found any yet. I suppose it needs a bit of research.

I saw once a willis jeep whose entire bodywork had been replicated using stainless steel and highly polished, so I suppose anything is possible.

HI, I know someone who can make the mudguards from aluminium but I need a technical drawing (my QPOD Sport is in Spain at the moment so I can't send a mudguard in to be copied. I have tried contacting Secma for drawings but have had no luck yet.

I have had the mudguards replaced twice under warranty and I have just found out that they cost £88 each, they will be cheaper if I get them made.
