I have some alloy hinges that I found to be perfect for the job, and I happen to have quite a few spare.  If you would like one, send me your name and address and I'll post one to you.

I cut a slot in one side of the hinge that slides over the gearstick, and pop riveted the other side to the plastic tub.  Worked a treat.

Yes the nearside wheel gives you better access although you can do it with it still on.  Did you find the description of how to do it on the forum?  I think I sent you a folder but I'm not good with IT.
